Actually, just looking at the Tools -> Add-In Manager, I realized that the J1939 add-in wasn't enabled. I hadn't known the Add-In Manager existed, so you just solved my problem. Thank you so much!

I am unable to select J1939 as a protocol for my connections, despite having the J1939 plug-in for PCAN Explorer 5 installed. I am running PCAN Explorer Version 5.4.0.877 on a Windows 7 OS and can clearly see the CANdb Import and J1939 plug-ins marked with Yes on the License Information screen ...
