native Rust support in API

I already discussed this with Uwe Wilhelm in a support email, but I was curious if anyone has worked on adding native support for Rust in the API. I wrote an application that used the C API within Rust and it worked out pretty well. I'm sure this would probably take the form of an officially supported crate within the Rust library ecosystem. Anyway, I wanted to register my interest.
