j1939 dbc

Post by jcbose » Tue 15. Oct 2019, 15:44

Hello - we just ordered PCAN explorer software along with hardware to analyze CAN traces. Currently we do NOT have a j1939 database file (*.dbc/*.xml) in hand. So, we also ordered j1939 add-in. The question is whether j1939 add-in comes with a SAE j1939 definition file so that we don't need to get any other dbc file to import. If this is yes, then can we export it to a *.dbc/*.xml format?

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

the J1939 Add-In in PCAN-Explorer includes the J1939 database in symbol file format (*.sym). If you also own the dbc Add-In, it will also be possible to export the database to dbc.

regards

Michael

Thanks Michael. Can you please send me a link for dbc add-in? Do you mean the following?
PCAN-Explorer 6: CANdb Import Add-in 6

I'm interested in this as well. Just to understand, does this method of exporting the DBC through the tool also provide a legal license for using the J1939 DBC file i.e. one that matches the requirements of use by SAE?

You are not allowed to use the SAE J1939 Databse (Symbol file) that we ship with the PE5/6 with J1939 extension outside the application. For that you need to buy the SAE J1939 Specifucation / Data from the SAE itself.
