I've never done any DeviceNet communication before, but it seems that DeviceNet is built on top of CAN.

I thought that I'd be able to connect a DeviceNet device directly to a PCAN-USB and at least view some traffic. So far, I haven't been able to do that. I'm not able to see any communication from the device at all. I've just wired the device (a vacuum gauge - https://www.mksinst.com/f/da01a-devicen ... manometers)

I downloaded the DeviceNetTool_PCAN-Light-USB.zip file from another forum entry and tried scanning several times. No dice.

Does anyone have any experience connecting directly to a single DeviceNet device using the PCAN-USB cable? I'm trying to figure out if I've got a wiring issue, or a broken device, or what. At this stage, I'm out of ideas.

Start the PCAN-View, select the used Bitrate and see if any communication is on the BUS.
If you have only this one node connected on the BUS, both units must be used as active device. Check also that you use a terminated cable (120 Ohm on each end between CAN-h and CAN-L)
The older PCAN-Light based simple DeviceNet Tool only scan a DeviceNet Network and shows the found device name member in clear Text.
You could chek if it is working by running the tool and after init the CAN Interface start the PCAN-View and connect to the same Hardware.

Thanks for the fast reply - It's almost definitely the cable. I didn't know there needed to be a termination resistor at all - I just blindly hooked up CAN-L and CAN-H signals. The device uses a 5 pin bayonet connector that also needs 24V for power, so I'm resorting to a custom cable.

I'll look at some wiring diagrams and give that a try first thing next year.

OK, I had a few minutes to try this, and had great success. I just added 120 ohms in a terminal strip between CAN-H and CAN-L wires.

I'm able to see some messages from the device now. Next steps will be to build up enough messages to be able to get the pressure from the device. There's a lot of detail in the device documentation, so I think I'll be able to do that. It'll just take some time.
