Every DBC file I try to open is read-only.
What's the cause for this?
I checked the files in explorer, they aren't marked as read-only there.

If you want to edit them, convert them to a symbol-file.

I see, thanks.
So I take it that the Symbol Editor cannot directly edit DBC files and I have to go the route over open dbc -> save as symbol-file -> export dbc.

Yes, exactly.

You can import them and use the for symbolic interpretation but editing is not possible in that state,
convert it to a symbol file and you can edit to your hearts content.
