PCAN-PC Card questions

Post by Bjorn » Sat 23. Apr 2011, 23:05

Hello,

I bought a PCAN-PC Card on Ebay and have a few questions about it.

Do I need to connect both GND's on the card or is one enough?
Do I need a PCAN-Term or a 120 Ohm termination resistor or has the PCAN-PC Card a termination resistor onboard?
What is the maximum length possible of the cable between the Card and the OBD2 connector?

To connect to the OBD-II from a vehicle to a PC CAN Interface, you need only the CAN-H and CAN-L.
If you use, for example, our OBD-II cable, you have only these to wires conected:
# 9-pin D-Sub socket (in accordance with CiA® 102)
* Pin 7: CAN-H
* Pin 2: CAN-L
# OBD-2 connector – assigned for CAN only on:
* Pin 6: CAN High (J-2284)
* Pin 14: CAN Low (J-2284)
You do not need a termination - the CAN bus is terminated, you are only a new node on the net.
Our OBD-II cable have a length of 1meter and i had never problems with it. To view the data on the CAN Bus you could run the PCAN-View monitoring Software (try 500k Bitrate)

Thank you for your quick reply.

I do know how to calculate the baudrate trough a scope and and mathematical formula, but do you have a tutorial on how to use your baudtool?

The Bitrate calculation Tool is available at BaudTool

The usage is very simple:
- insert your prefered bitrate
- press calculate
- search the best pair of BTR0/BTR1 for your need, depending on sample point etc.

Here a sample for 500KB with a sample point of 87,5%
